The Growing Isiokpo New Yam Festival

Location: Isiokpo is located within the present Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers state. The community share land boundaries with Elele, Omagwa, Ibaa, Emohua, Choba, Ogbakiri, Aluu.

 The New yam festival is dated back centuries from the days of OKPO WAGIDI.
 
Isiokpo New yam Festivals are popular holiday in Isiokpo, as it is a significant sign that farming season has come to an end for that present season.
The Festival  usually held in the beginning of September or the  at the end of the rainy season. It is named after yams, the most common food in many Ikwerre communities. In Rivers state, dancers wear masquerades.


People offer yams to gods and ancestors before distributing them to the villagers to give thanks to the spirits above them.  Oriji  is the name for the annual New  Nigeria, the ancient kingdom and the ancestral home of the Ikwerre Kingdom, to honor of the earth goddess and the ancestral spirits of the land. And so many others celebrated.
