Our Audition/Portfolio Reviews & One-On-One Meetings offer applicants an opportunity to demonstrate their skills to our admissions representatives in order to be eligible for a talent-based discount on NYFA tuition. Auditions/Portfolio Reviews & One-On-One Meetings are available only to those who apply for a one-year conservatory or longer program, including BFA, BA, MFA, MA, AFA, and two-year conservatory programs.
Our filmmaking Master Class will be conducted by Jonathan Whittaker, the partner and founding member of New York based production company ManInHat. This six-hour Master Class on “The Scene” will blend lecture, screening, and group participation. Students will explore: what constitutes a good scene, how to structure the writing of a scene, how a director breaks down the scene and creates point of view, directing actors, designing a visual strategy, and more.

Jonathan Whittaker: M.A. in Media Studies, The New School. Partner and founding member of ManInHat, a New York based production company. With over 15 years of experience in the film industry, having produced, directed and lensed short films, music videos, live concerts, commercials, TV shows, feature docs and 3D specials, he is never one to shy away from a new challenge. Nissan, Sony Pictures, DirecTV, Gillette and Sports Illustrated are just a few of his clients and collaborators. When he is not on set or in an edit you can usually find him at the head of a lecture hall, sharing his thoughts on the art of cinematography and directing. In addition to being a resident professor at The New York Film Academy, he has also given guest lectures all over the globe — including the venerable Beijing Film Academy, Shanghai Theater Academy, and Dar ElHekma (in Saudi Arabia).
Acting Audition Requirements: Please prepare two contemporary, contrasting 60-90 second monologues from a published contemporary English language play or screenplay.
Musical Theatre Audition Requirements: Please prepare two contrasting musical theatre songs with musical accompaniment on a USB, personal musical player (e.g. iPhone), or CD, and one 60-90 second monologue from a published contemporary English language play or screenplay.

Portfolio Reviews for Degree Programs:

 Creative samples can be accepted in various stages of development, or as completed work. Examples of work can range from drawings, conceptual illustrations, short films, poetry, short stories, storyboards, designs, photographs, three-dimensional models, or digitally generated images. Students may choose to submit a typed screenplay or short story (10 page maximum).

The New York Film Academy offers talent based discounts on tuition, to selected applicants, based on their natural skills in their chosen discipline.


Discounted Tuition Opportunities:
A Portfolio Review for a Talent Based Discount is eligible for applicants interested in attending a degree program at our Los Angeles and South Beach Campuses.
A Performance Audition for a Talent Based Discount is eligible for applicants interested in attending NYFA's Musical Theatre or Acting for Film conservatory & degree programs.
Please note: we will require you to complete an application form prior to our scheduled meeting. Once you’ve indicated which event you would like to attend, an admissions representative will contact to you and be able to guide you on the process to submit an application.
