PRESS RELEASE : NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS), JOINT CAMPUS COMMITTEE, RIVERS AXIS

THE OVER 100% HIKE IN THE SCHOOL FEES AND HOSTEL FEES OF THE RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, PORT-HARCOURT.

Protocols. "Before, one cuts coats according to one's size but now, coats are cut according to the available materials". A popular Nigerian adage.

The attention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee, Rivers Axis has been drawn to the recent unscrupulous increment of over 100% of the school fees of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port-Harcourt.
We ponder if the management of RSUST, PH are not Nigerians and even if they're, we wonder if they are not residents in the country because in this period of economic recession, where parents, guardians and sponsors find it extremely difficult to feed their children/wards, the management has decided to contribute their own quota by increasing the untold hardship.

The Leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in the state unanimously condemn the wanton hike in school fee for the students of RSUST, PH. How can students who were paying #14,500 (for indigenes) and #65,000 for (non-indigenes) and were barely coping last academic session come this session to pay #36,500 and #76,500 for indigenes and non-indigenes respectively?

Worthy of note is the unnecessary increment of the hostel fee from the previous #20,000 to #30,000 for ordinary hostels while FCMB hostel is now kept at #40,000. This is done while no effort has been made by the management led by Prof. Blessing C. Didia to rehabilitate the hostels as the toilets and bathrooms have been uncondusive since the past administration. Sadly, the hostel built by the Niger Delta Development Committee (NDDC) to ameliorate the accommodation of the school are now given out for #40,000.

Also, the attention of the leadership of NANS in the state has been dragged to the superfluous payment of a professional Development fee as high as #15,000 by students, all the departments, all the levels. And we ask, do students pay for professional levies? Are professional levies not for the professionals in a profession?

To our greatest dismay, it is depressionally dismal to note that even the Students Union Government of the institution not only corroborated in this decision but also collaborated with the management to increase the Students Union dues to #2500 and #1500 for fresh students and returning students respectively from the previous #500 and #1200 for returning and fresh students respectively as a condition of accepting the increment of school fees by the management of the institution.

OUR STAND
1. NANS RIvers State condemn the increment in school fees.
2. We condemn the hike in hostel fee for both the ordinary hostel blocks, NDDC and FCMB.
3. We condemn in totality the payment of a professional development levy by the students as they are not yet professionals.
4. Lastly, we condemn the increment of the Students Union Dues by the Union's Executive members. Also, fresh students paying higher is condemned as no preferential treatment is given to them.

OUR DEMAND
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in the state demands the following:

1. The total reversal of the school fees to status quo.
2. The rehabilitation of the ordinary hostel and toilet and bathrooms and complete reversal of all hostel fees to status quo.
3. The stoppage of payment of the professional development fee.
4. The complete reversal of the Students Union Dues and keeping the students dues the same,  whether fresh or new students.

The National Association of Nigerian Students in the State is given an ULTIMANTUM of 5 days starting from today Monday 17th October, 2016 to Friday, 21st October, 2016 for the full implementation of these demands to avoid breakdown of law and order in the campus else, the State Secretariat, in conjunction with the Zonal and National will be relocating to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port-Harcourt next week Monday, 24th October, 2016.

The leadership of NANS in the State is seeking that management of the institution address the matter as urgent as possible, as we are partners in Education.

"Education is not a Privilege but Our Right ".

Comr. Wondikum C. Obinali,
Chairman, NANS JCC Rivers Axis.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED ON THE 19TH OF OCTOBER, 2016 AFTER A CLOSED DOOR MEETING OF STUDENT LEADERS OF THE RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, NKPOLU ORO-OWORUKWO
PORT HARCOURT

1. The Student Union Government (SUG), National Union of Rivers State Students (NURSS) National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Niger Delta Student Union Government (NIGSUG) held a joint meeting consequent upon the reaction of NANS over the increment in the fees of the River State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt.

2. The stakeholders considered the circumstances leading to the increment and the approach of the management to involve the SUG to reach a decision on fees’ increase. The SUG was invited by the University Management with a proposed fee structure that was to come into effect from the 2016/2017 session.

3. The SUG expressed its rejection of the proposed fees structured and asked for the time to make consultation with its constituents. It carried out consultations among the three arms, Students’ Executive Council-SEC, Students’ Representative Council-SRC, The Students’ Judicial Council-SJC), Faculty and Departmental Presidents, and NURSS.

4. In the cause of the consultation, the SUG didn't involve some of the NANS stakeholders on campus and this subsequently led to the lack of communication between the other arms of students’ leadership and other NANS Stakeholders, the SUG regretted this oversight and apologized to the NANS stakeholders and they have all resolved to work together.

5. Consequently, all the stakeholders have agreed with the outcome of the consultation undertaken by the SUG and submitted to the university management for implementation.

6. As a result of this resolution the stakeholders wish to advice all students of Rivers State University Of Science And Technology Port Harcourt to remain calm as the union has acted, and would continue to ac,t in the interest of the students of our great University
