According to the statement from the State House, the Vice-President, Danny Faure would be sworn in on October 16 to finish up Michel’s term.

Seychelles has witnessed a political revolution lately as evident in the recent parliamentary elections. For the first time in history the opposition party wins by a 33 votes in the nation’s parliament.

While it is unclear what must have motivated the resignation of the President, Africans across the continent see a noble good in his decision. It is nearly unheard of that an African president willingly decided to step down and hand over power to another.
In January, this year, Macky Sall, Senegalese president led by example and reduced his tenure by 2 years.

Hear his own words:
President James Alix Michel was re-elected into office in December 2015. He has barely completed the first year of the second tenure, and regardless, he is certain it was time for him to quit.

The 72-year-old has been in office since 2004 under the flagship of the People’s Party which has been the ruling power in Seychelles since 1977.

In April, the National Assembly approved a constitutional amendment to limit the presidential and vice-presidential terms in office. From a three 5-year tenure the constitution was amended to a two 5-year tenure.

“Tonight I am announcing my decision to resign from the post of President of the Republic.”
“I am leaving the Office of the President with a sense of mission accomplished. During these 12 years that you gave me the honour and privilege to lead our nation, I have completed my responsibility and my duty.”

“After 12 years as president, the time has come to hand over the reins of power to a new leader. A new leader who will take Seychelles to the next frontier of its development.”
