MENTAL CHECK FOR YOUNG MINDS : PTR2      TIPS MONDAY: "Be a Team, Player"

Being a lone player hits me more like immaturity.
When you get on a team, you don't need to run down anyone to take their spot.

You don't need people to see you as 'na only am dey work' when you are on a team.

The beauty and advantage of having a team is working together to achieve more, with each person focused on what he/she knows best.

Sadly, I have seen less team players in the south south and more in the West.
The reason Lagos seem to achieve more than the rest of Nigeria? People work in teams!

In the south, people want to be their own project manager, media consultant, activator, secretary, etc... they play down the skills of other people.
Worst off are those who run other people down just to take their spot or make themselves feel good.
Hello?
We never grow this way.

I remember a friend that called me to consult for a company. On getting there, the management said they liked all I said and asked that I replace my friend's position in the company while they shift him to another administrative position. I wasn't comfortable with it but they made me see that the company was suffering and going no where even with salaries paid to their staff.

I took the position after speaking with my friend and letting him know that the moment I ain't adding value to the company anymore or I find out that my work there is done and am just sitting to receive salary, that I'd leave.
He grudgingly accepted and tried to undermine my work while there. I left when I was done there and sadly, the company folded up some months later.
That experience taught me lessons.

See, when on a team, it doesn't matter where you play or what fancy title is on your office door, ensure that what remains your focus is achieving the goals of the company/organisation you work for or represent. I remember taking up work from different departments in the company and even doing the CEO's work...

Another lesson I learnt is that you should not be on a team and work to its disadvantage. There is no point being on a team if you ain't gonna work to make it work...if such person is found on your team, talk to him/her and if he/she continues, take him/her off the team before he/she takes the best off the team or makes the rest lose steam.

Lastly, be committed to the long term and short term goals of your team. Keep them in mind and move the team towards it even when the visioner slacks.

Be a team, player.
Don't be a lone ranger.
Be a Voltron, not a Superman.
Be more of Avengers, not Iron Man.

You achieve more as a team than a little man/woman trying to be a star on your own.
